NURSES Month

Honoring our Nurses this National Nurses Month

May is National Nurses Month, a special time to recognize the tireless dedication, expertise, and heartfelt compassion of nurses who serve on the front lines of healthcare. At First Care Home Services, we see nurses in their truest form — compassionate professionals delivering care with heart, skill, and strength every single day. Whether in homes, hospitals, or disaster zones, nurses are the steady force behind healing.

Nurse’s Month is our chance to step back, say thank you, and honor the nurses who serve with quiet courage — especially those on the frontlines of home healthcare.

Did You Know? Clara Barton — “The Angel of the Battlefield”

Before the American Red Cross existed, one woman saw a need and took action. Clara Barton, a self-taught nurse during the Civil War, became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her relentless care of wounded soldiers.

Here are five things you may not know about Clara Barton:

  • She had no formal nursing education. Barton learned by doing, driven by compassion and an unshakable sense of duty.
  • She went straight to the front lines. Most women stayed behind the lines, but Barton took supplies — and care — directly to active battlefields.
  • She founded the American Red Cross in 1881 and led it for over two decades, shaping disaster response in the U.S.
  • She was a fierce advocate for veterans. After the Civil War, Barton helped locate missing soldiers and mark unmarked graves.
  • She didn’t stop working until age 83. Barton led relief efforts during the Spanish-American War and beyond.

Her legacy lives on every time a nurse steps into chaos to bring calm — something our First Care team does every day in homes across the community.
